Homework

Students are encouraged to view the assignments as tools to enhance their mastery of the subject material. You may work together on solving problem sets (that is, homework problems), but you must turn in your own work. You may NOT copy someone else’s solutions. Copying someone else’s work, as well as knowingly permitting another student to copy your work, will be considered a violation of the university Honor Policy. More on this below under “Collaboration Versus Cheating.” (ENGM 445 Miller)

The homework will not be graded, and as such you are encouraged to work together with other students (answers for the assigned homework will be provided). (EGRE 254 Klenke)

The homework in the class is intended to give the students practice and students may work together for the purpose of learning. However, it is NOT permissible to copy another students homework or designs in any form, including those from books and the Internet. (EGRE 365 Klenke)

You do NOT need to pledge your homework. You may work with other students on your homework however, you must turn in your own work. Turning in someone else’s work is not acceptable. If it is obvious to me you have copied your homework from old homework solutions or from another student, you will both receive a 0 for the entire assignment. (SCMA 302 Burch)

Homework: Students are allowed to collaborate on these assignments, however the work turned in must represent their own effort. Photocopies of assignments completed as a group, or exact disk copies are unacceptable. (EGRE 336 Ahmad)

You may work together on solving homework problems, but you must turn in your own work. If you turn it in, that means you know how to do it. Copying homework, using existing solutions or solutions manuals will be considered a violation of the University Honor Policy. (COE 3001 Yeo)

Copying a solution from a solution manual for a course required text, prior exams, or prior homework, unless explicitly permitted by the instructor, is considered cheating. (EGMN 455 Miller)

I encourage collaboration, not cheating (See Note 2 for a distinction between the two). Each student must perform and submit their own work. Make sure that you yourself understand the concepts being tested. (EGRB 102 Pepperl)

Approved resources for use with homework assignments: textbook, online resources that enhance education but do not provide direct answers, and VCU library resources. Exact solutions or solution manuals obtained online or through a friend are prohibited.(EGRB 491 McClure)

In this class, you are encouraged to work with others on homework assignments and some projects (as specified). When you work a problem as a group, please list all the names of the group members on that assignment. This group or team approach is a great way to learn the course material and it is typical of the way the engineering profession works through teamwork and frequent cross–checking. However, you are not allowed to copy others’ homework nor present others’ work as your own. You must be able to explain and defend any work you submit.

With a certain amount of determination and financial resources, it is possible to obtain the Instructor Solution Manual for the textbook. However, the unauthorised use, possession, or convenient access of the Instructor Solution Manual is a very dangerous and serious violation of the Honour Code in this course. In addition, unauthorised possession or use of the Instructor Solution Manual is usually a serious violation of the textbook publisher’s legal copyright. Furthermore, you will not have learned the material — which could lead to dire consequences later in your professional life.

Also, do not forget that I will be seriously displeased with you if you are discovered to be consulting the Instructor Solution Manual (ISM). Trust me, this is a very unpleasant situation for all concerned. Please keep in mind that I have taught this course many times before (and know much more about it than you do) and you are taking it once (hopefully). Therefore, I am usually aware (or become aware) of the errors in the Instructor Solution Manual — yes, there are errors in the Instructor Solution Manual — and I may inadvertently assign such problems in order to expose any students using the Instructor Solution Manual. (EGRM 515 Sexton)

The Aplia and WorkSheet assignments are “pledged” and “open book”. You must complete them without assistance from anyone else. You may use the book, your notes, and the internet to answer the questions. You may not look at another current or former student's answers, keys, handouts, or notes, nor act in a manner that allows another student to look easily at your answers or notes to complete the assignments. You may not discuss in any fashion the questions with current or former students until after the instructor discusses the assignment in class. You should direct any questions you have about the assignments to the instructor. (ECON Millner)
