Arrest Notification
At VCU, students have a continuing responsibility to let Student Affairs know if they are arrested. This applies at all times—whether classes are in session or not—and no matter where the arrest happens (in Virginia, out-of-state, or internationally).
- Being taken into custody by law enforcement
- Receiving a written citation or summons (even if you are not physically taken into custody)
- All arrests for violations of federal, state, local, or international law, excluding minor traffic violations (ex: speeding tickets, parking citations) that do not result in injury to others
- Not considered “minor” traffic violations (and therefore must be reported):
- Driving Under the Influence (DUI/DWI)
- Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol
Reporting an arrest does not mean that you have violated the Student Code of Conduct. An arrest does not necessarily indicate a violation of law or VCU policy.
An arrest indicates the existence of criminal charges that, if adjudicated in a court of law, can result in a conviction of or plea to a violation of law. Following arrest, you have an opportunity to contest the criminal charges in court. The outcome of the criminal proceedings may trigger student conduct proceedings for violation of law as prohibited by section I.O of the Student Code of Conduct.
VCU will review information about an arrest to determine what university support or other resources are available to the arrested student, whether the reported conduct otherwise violates an applicable university policy, and whether action is warranted under the university policy on Violence Prevention and Threat Assessment and Management.
VCU takes student conduct seriously. By reporting arrests promptly, you help ensure:
- The university can provide support and resources if needed
- Cases are addressed fairly and consistently
- You remain in compliance with the Student Code of Conduct
- Failure to report promptly may result in student conduct charges for failure to comply and applicable sanctions
- Retaliation for reporting or asking questions is strictly prohibited
Students can notify Student Affairs by completing the
The Student Code of Conduct requires you to report an arrest promptly, which is within 48 hours after an arrest or as soon as reasonably practicable thereafter. The University will take into account extenuating circumstances that reasonably affect the arrested student’s ability to report.
